Movie -:- The Family Doctor

Family Doctor is a short story of a married couple who has been married for years but couldn’t conceive and bare children.

So after many failed attempts they decided to visit a family friend at his hospital who happens to be a doctor to ascertain what the problem is. I hope you enjoy the story.

SCENE 1. INT. LIVING ROOM – DAY

Crystal is seated as Jenny comes in very angry.

JENNY 

Crystal, where is the spaghetti I kept in the pot?

CRYSTAL

I gave it to Maurice. He came back hungry and I was tired so I gave it to him

JENNY

You gave my food to your husband!

CRYSTAL

Sorry, dear, I will soon go and cook dinner. 

JENNY: What stupid dinner? Did I tell you I want your dinner? What did you do that got you tired please? Because all you do is sit here lazing about every day. 

CRYSTAL

Jenny, it hasn’t gotten to that

JENNY

Like hell it has. You do absolutely nothing. The only thing that you are supposed to do joyfully, you have still failed.

What does it take to conceive, Crystal? All the times you keep me sleepless at night with your moans, what are they for? Just to satisfy your desires and not my brother’s desire for a child.

CRYSTAL

Jenny!

JENNY

That’s my name! The next time I see your barren hand close to anything I keep, you wouldn’t like what I shall do to you.

Jenny walks away angrily as tears drop down Crystal’s eyes. 

SCENE 2. INT. BEDROOM – LATER

Crystal is crying as door opens and Maurice enters. He is wearing casuals.

MAURICE

Hey babes… How are…?

Maurice notices Crystal and rushes to her

MAURICE

Babes, what’s the problem? Why are you crying?

CRYSTAL

Why is my case different? Why is God doing this to me?

MAURICE

What is wrong? What happened? 

CRYSTAL

Why can’t I have my own child? Even if it’s just one

MAURICE

Babe we have already talked about this several times and I told you He will give us a child at his appointed time. 

CRYSTAL

And when is this appointed time? Is it when I am dead?

MAURICE

God forbid! Nobody is dying… Listen babes, don’t let this bother you, alright? I am here for you and that’s all that matters. 

CRYSTAL

For how long Maurice? How long when your family has already started calling me barren?

MAURICE

My family call you barren! No that can’t be true…

CRYSTAL

Jenny called me barren earlier simply because she cooked the spaghetti I gave you in the morning. 

MAURICE

Jenny called you, barren? Crystal nods as Maurice storms out.

SCENE 3. INT. LIVING ROOM – CONTINUOUS 

Maurice barges into the living room followed by Crystal to find Jenny seated over a call.

MAURICE

Put away that phone (No response). If you don’t put away that phone this moment, I will break on top of your head!

Jenny ends the calla and drops phone.

JENNY

What is the meaning of this?

MAURICE

Did you call my wife barren?

JENNY: Isn’t that what she is? Maurice slaps her as Crystal holds him back.

CRYSTAL

Stop it babes…

MAURICE 
Let me deal with this disrespectful thing! Does my wife look like your mate? Did I marry her for you? If you are so eager to have an additional member of the family, why don’t you go and marry and have yours?

JENNY

Brother, you slapped me!

MAURICE

And I shall slap you even more if you ever disrespect my wife. 

JENNY

Well, I guess that’s it then. I am leaving first thing in the morning.

MAURICE

With all pleasure.

Jenny walks away as does Maurice. Crystal is dumbfounded. 

SCENE 4. INT. BEDROOM – NIGHT 

Maurice is seated as Crystal comes to him

CRYSTAL

Babes, about what happened…

MAURICE

Crystal, if it’s about Jenny, I don’t want to hear it…

There is slight pause before she continues

CRYSTAL

I was thinking we can go see Jason in the morning. 

MAURICE

We have done that before.

CRYSTAL

Not at his hospital.

MAURICE

What difference does it make?

CRYSTAL

He is your best friend and has your interest at heart. He will be more detailed and proffer solutions. 

MAURICE

We have already been certified alright

CRYSTAL

I know but can you please do this last one for me? please, babe?

JAOSN

Fine… Tomorrow then

Crystal kisses him.

SCENE 5. INT. LIVING ROOM – DAY

Maurice is seated as Crystal walks to him.

MAURICE

He babes, you are up?

CRYSTAL

Couldn’t sleep

MAURICE

Why?

CRYSTAL

Don’t know… Babes, what’s up with the results? It’s been twenty four hours already

MAURICE

Jason said he will call once they are ready.

CRYSTAL

He also said on or before twenty four hours. So why don’t you call him to know what’s up?

MAURICE

Is that necessary?

CRYSTAL

It is to me babes, please…

MAURICE:

Fine.

Maurice dials number and waits a while as Jason answers.

MAURICE

Jason how far?

JASON VO

I dey o… I dey road de come your house sef

MAURICE

Any wahala?

JASON VO

No. I go soon reach.

Jason hangs up.

CRYSTAL

So?

MAURICE

He is on his way here?

CRYSTAL

Oh, okay…

SCENE 6. INT. LIVING ROOM – MOMENT LATER 

Maurice is seated with Crystal as Jason addresses them. 

MAURICE

Guy this one wey you carry result come house so. Hope all is well

JASON

Yes, all is well… I was in the neighbour to attend to a private patient so I decided to stop by

MAURICE

Okay… So, how far?

CRYSTAL

Yes, what is the result, Jason?

JASON

All, it is fine. Your results show that both of you are okay. 

MAURICE

You see what I told you. 

CRYSTAL

So, why haven’t I been able to conceive? 

JASON

Patience, Crystal, children would at God’s appointment time. Just don’t stop trying.

MAURICE

Same thing I have been telling her.  

SECEN 7. INT. MAURICE’S CAR – LATER 

Jason is with Crystal. She is crying. 

JASON

I called you out here because what I am about to share with you is confidential. 

CRYSTAL

What is it, Jason?

JASON

It’s about the test result

CRYSTAL

It said we are alright. That was what you said

JASON: I am afraid but that wasn’t entirely true

CRYSTAL

What do you mean?

JASON

You are free and perfectly alright.

CRYSTAL

And my husband?

JASON

I am afraid but he has a very low sperm count it is unlikely that he will be able to get a woman pregnant. 

CRYSTAL

What?

JASON

I am sorry, Crystal. I couldn’t tell Maurice the truth because it will break him and that might mean the end to your marriage. I know how much you love him and what this marriage means to you. 

CRYSTAL

What am I supposed to do now? Just continue living with him and pretending like everything is okay? 

JASON

Yes… But you are okay and can have your own children. 

CRYSTAL

Will I impregnate myself? 

JASON

I will do it for you.

Camera zooms into Crystal’s shocked face.

SCENE 8. INT. LIVING ROOM – DAY 

Crystal emerges from kitchen with hand towel just as Maurice descends the stairs ready for work. 

CRYSTAL

You are leaving, babes?

MAURICE: Yes, I have an early appointment

CRYSTAL

And the breakfast?

MAURICE

I will do early lunch at the office. 

CRYSTAL

Alright.

MAURICE

Are you alright? You have been uncharacteristically cold since you got back from the mall yesterday

CRYSTAL

I am fine, babes… Now you go to work.

MAURICE

I love you 

CRYSTAL

I love you more…

Maurice leaves as Crystal looks at her phone then dials.

CRYSTAL

Hello, Maurice. 

SCENE: 9. INT. BEDROOM – LATER

Door opens as Jason barges in kissing Crystal intensely. They fall on the bed as shot dissolves.

MOMENT LATER

They are both in bed after making out.

JASON

That was heavenly 

CRYSTAL

I feel terrible 

JASON: Don’t… You are doing the right thing. And I assure you that aside getting you pregnant, I guarantee you the best sex ever.

CRYSTAL

This isn’t about the sex for me, Jason.

JASON

Alright… 

CRYSTAL

Come and get going before he returns

JASON

But this is still morning.

CRYSTAL

Yes, we have done it, haven’t we? So come and go.

Jason looks at her and gets off the bed. He dresses off.

JASON

I will be expecting your next call.

Jason leaves as tears drop down Crystal’s eyes.
